Target Audience

Arctic Monkeys:
  • Their target market are teenagers who are between 13 and 19. They also try to catch older audiences of people ages 20-30 years old.
  • The style of music they play is rock/alternative, but it is more commonly named as Indie. Indie originally meant and still does mean an Independent Record label, but now has become more of a genre of music.
  • Arctic Monkeys were one of the first bands who had got attention from their music via the internet, to be more specific, they got their attention through the social networking site, Myspace.
  • They also got attention by giving away free music at some of their gigs. They recorded demo's of them playing and then gave them away on CD at their gigs. These were shared around by the people who got them, this was a type of viral marketing.
  • I have found a quote from one of the band members saying what they thought about the viral marketing opportunity they had given. "We never made those demo's to make money or anything. We were giving them away free anyway - that was a better way for people to hear them. And it made the gigs better. because people knew the words and came and sang along." - Found on Wikipedia.org
  • I also found that apparently they knew nothing about the myspace whichwas made for them. The myspace which was made for them was made by their fans and I suppose that the free music that was given out had been put onto that myspace.
  • Myspace definitely did help 'Arctic Monkeys' but it was mostly down to their fans for making the 'Myspace' for them.
  • Their store - www.arcticmonkeys-store.co.uk - which appears on their website sells all of their albums and their official merchandise. Merchandise they sell are CD's, singles, bags, DVD's, clothing, vinyl's, books, posters and badges.
  • Bags and clothing are a good idea for bands to use as promotional material because they can be seen by others, for example: at gigs, out in the public and in foreign countries. This will make the band become more popular around the globe.
  • Here are some websites that 'Arctic Monkeys' appear on: Myspace, Facebook, Last.FM, Twitter, Domino Records (their record label) and online shopping websites.
  • The band were not only very successful with how far they have come, but they were also very lucky to have their fans add them to 'Myspace'. If they hadn't of done that, they may still be looking for a record deal.

Slipknot:
  • Their target market are mainly teenagers they used to be for more older teenagers because of their crude and rude lyrics, but as the music generation is changing rapidly more and more younger audiences are exposed to their genre.
  • The style of music they play is heavy metal/screamo (a subdivision of emo and hardcore).
  • They seem to sound like most metal bands do, but infact they are very unique. They had a line up of nine members until a recent death of their bassist. The remaining members play; turntables, drums, custom percussion (x2), guitars (x2), samples and media and vocals (including backing).
  • Also which adds to their unique style is that they wear face masks which fits in with their obscure genre.
  • They got their attention the traditional way by playing gigs and releasing demo EP's. They played a lot of local gigs and once they had got plenty of material, they decided to record it, this was then made into their first album which was self released.
  • During the recording process they began getting more gigs, which other bigger bands, one being 'Stone Sour' which is now a famous band who have released many of their own albums. Corey Taylor who is now in both bands 'Slipknot' and 'Stone Sour'.
  • The internet did help them along the way to becomemore known to their audience, but the amount of shows that they played did pay off well and the more material they wrote meant that they could record as much as possible. They finally recorded an EP which included a song called 'Spit It Out' which was then included in their self titled album released in 1998.
  • In the July of 1998, they were signed to 'Roadrunner Records' which is specific to their style in music. Since 1998, they still have been signed to 'Roadrunner Records'. - Found on Wikipedia.org
  • 'Slipknot' have a very large merchandise store. It is not on their official website, because that is just a image of their bassist, who recently died. It is their in memory of him. I found an Official store for them on www.corpseclothing.com.

The Rolling Stones:
  • Their market is has grown over the years that they have been around.
  • Although they were first recognised during their early years in the 1960's, they have grown and are still together to present day. Of course their original line up has changed a few times, due to band member needs.
  • Recently, within the 2000's they have had a big impact on the younger generation of teenagers, around the age of 12-19.
  • Of course they still have their older fans who are around 50+.
  • Their genre is rock n' roll/blues and it followed the popular style on music around their time.
  • They are popular all over the world, especially in the UK and the USA.
  • They recorded 22 studio albums in the UK, 8 concert albums and several compilations. - Found on Wikipedia.org
  • Like a typical band from their era, they were founded by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards who both had known each other since primary school. They decided to form a band, when they shared their love for rhythm and blues at a chance meeting at London train station.
  • Once they had got all their members, a total of 7 of them, the played their first gig at 'London's Marquee Club'. They not so long after had a 8 month residency at the 'Crawdaddy Club', this increased their exposure and introduced them to Andrew Loog Oldham, who soon became their manager.
  • In the spring of 1963, The Rolling Stones signed a record contract with Decca and started to record singles and by 1964 they had released their self titled debut album. - Found on Musicianguide.com
  • I found an Official store for them on http://store.universal-music.co.uk.

The artist that I have chosen - 'Kids With Fireworks' - already have a target market of young teenagers, aging between 14 and 19, but because their music covers many genre's they also have a audience of older generations. This can b unusual for a newish band, but it is ideal for what I am looking for, because then I make my music video and ancillary tasks to reflect most ages for my target audience.
