Niche Markets

Bands and musicians are trying to find their niches, by this I mean they are trying to find a 'gap in the market'. I have been researching bands who have been successful with this and found one which has stood out the most for me. They are:

Mumford & Sons:
  • They have found a 'gap in the market' for folk/rock and made it for the ears of teenagers.
  • They are different sort of band to most people are used to, they have 4 members who play more than one instrument each. This has developed their style because when they play, live or on their album, they switch instruments.
  • They include 8 different instruments in their variety of songs, not including the vocals and memorable harmonies. Instruments include: guitar, drums, mandolin, banjo, dobro, keyboards, accordian and double bass. - Found on Wikipedia.org
  • Ben Lovett (keyboards and accordian) said "As soon as we sat down together, just the four of us, we knew we had become a band because what came out was unique to us four as individuals,"
  • Once they had grasped their unique style and written some material, they decided to tour straight away to gain the best possible chance of success.
  • When they were recording their debut album, 'Sigh No More', they were asked by a producer who had worked with bands with a similar genre. This made their music even more exciting because the producer knew how to make it the best. - Found on www.mumfordandsons.com
Heather McDonald said:
"The sad truth is, every writer, radio station, website or fan for that matter, you are trying to reach is likely being bombarded with info from other music hopefuls.
You need a reason to stand out. Try to find something that will make people more curious about you - give them a reason to want to know more. Being elusive worked wonders for 'Belle & Sebastian' at the start of their career and people write about Marilyn Manson for being well Marilyn Manson.
You don't have to devise a huge, calculated persona, but giving people a reason to check out your show or CD before others can help."

The artist that I am using for my music video and ancillary tasks do have a niche. Their music is a combination of a few genre's. They play the indie style music (like Arctic Monkeys), but also have synth sounding songs (like Bloc Party) and finally their songs are very melodic with a mixture of distortion and  quiet complex guitar riffs with pulsing drums. Under a genre of music their music would be alternative/pop.
They are a 4 piece, who play the usual line up of instruments: 2 guitars, drums, bass and vocals, but they make their music exciting. I can use this band to my advantage and many other bands, by accessing knowledge about them and how they make their unique music into a 'gap in the market'.
